Coping with loss of a loved one
Be kind to yourself as you journey through grief and mourning the loss of a loved one.
- Take care of yourself. Try to eat healthy food, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, stay hydrated, practice spiritual/religious beliefs, avoid using alcohol and/or drugs and keep a sense of humor.
- Be aware and honor the limits of your abilities during this time. Recognize the limits of your energy, strength, social interactions and level of patience.
- Talk with caring friends and ask for help. It is okay to ask for help. Let others know when you need to talk, need help with tasks, or just need support. Reach out to others who have experienced loss and who are supportive of you.
- Spend time in nature. Step outside, breathe fresh air and go for a brief walk. Take a few moments to observe and notice nature using your five senses.
- Avoid making major decisions or life changes right away. If possible, wait awhile before making big decisions such as moving or changing jobs.
- Let go of ideas about how everything “should” be. Gently work to accept things as they are now, lower your expectations and be kind to yourself during this process. Allow time to experience thoughts and feelings.
- Bursts of grief will occur at any moment. Grief experiences may occur at any time and any place. Accept these bursts and talk with someone who understands.
- Plan ahead for special occasions. Anniversaries, birthdays, and holidays can be stressful and overwhelming at times.
- Join a grief support group in person or online. It might help to talk with others who are also grieving.
- Consider professional support. Sometimes talking to a counselor about your grief can help.
- Be patient. Grief is not something to “get over.” Everyone grieves differently and at their own pace.
